Thailand's illegal wildlife trade flourishes

Multi-billion-dollar racket in endangered tigers proves resilient in the face of police raids on slaughterhouses.

In Thailand, the discovery of a slaughterhouse for wild animals has drawn international attention to the trade in endangered tigers.

The police discovered a group of men in northwestern Bangkok chopping up several carcasses, including two wild tigers.

But as Al Jazeera's Veronica Pedrosa reports from the Thai capital, a week after the police raid the illegal business said to be worth billions of dollars continues as usual.

Thailand's brisk trade in illegal species

Traders at Bangkok's Chatuchak market openly admit to illegally dealing in rare animals.

Thailand has long been considered a major hub for the illegal trade in rare and exotic species.

At Bangkok's Chatuchak market, the main centre of the trade, business is brisk.

As part of our wildlife SOS series, Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay met traders at the market who openly admit to selling illegally obtained animals.

Thailand battles trade in tigers

Authorities seek to track down poachers, but hopes are dwindling as population declines.

Tigers are one of the world's most endangered species, with only 3,200 believed to remain in the wild.

About 200 of them are in western Thailand, but until recently it was thought that there were no tigers on the eastern side of the country.

Twelve tigers have been spotted in recent weeks in the east.

But tiger carcasses can sell on the black market for tens of thousands of dollars.

While the government is trying to track down tiger hunters, hope is waning as their population declines.

Al Jazeera's Aela Callan reports from eastern Thailand.
