8 Sea Lions found Shot to Death

Seattle: In recent weeks, eight sea lions have been found shot to death in the Puget Sound area. Wildlife officials are continuing to investigate the tragedy. The bodies of seven sea lions were recently found on the Nisqually River. All of the seals were shot.

Monday, the eighth casualty of man’s cruelty was found on west Seattle’s Lincoln Park beach. A bullet was removed from the left lung lobe of the California sea lion.

Sea lions are under the security system of the Marine Mammal Protection act. The Endangered Species Act guards the well-being of the Stellar sea lion.

An independent animal protection group, Seal Sitters, are part of the on-going investigation and protection of the sea mammals. This is not the first incident of sea lion shooting. Two years ago, the Humane Society offered a $2500 reward for the capture of poachers who shot five sea lions.

Poaching is defined by killing or trapping an animal: under protection by the Endangered Species Act, a game animal shot or maimed outside of hunting season, an animal endangered by a hunter not carrying a license, or any other act against an animal that does not fall into regulations by the state or federal government.
